Legacy Giving

Estate & Planned Giving Opportunities

By making a provision in your estate plans, you will guarantee that Esperanza Shelter will continue to make hope, empowerment, healing and justice more accessible for survivors of domestic violence. Your generosity can play a pivotal role in breaking down financial barriers and ensuring that survivors never walk their journey to healing and justice alone. Together, we can create a world where every survivor feels supported and heard.

How can you help a survivor with your future gift? It is quite easy. You can:

For more information on how to make your current or future gift to help advance and secure Esperanza’s mission, please reach out to our Vice President of Donor and Community Relations, Jan Stewart, at development@esperanzashelter.org.

Contact Your IRA or Retirement Plan Administrator to name Esperanza Shelter as a primary or contingent beneficiary.

Please update your primary beneficiary designation form through your plan administrator. Here you can designate Esperanza Shelter as the primary beneficiary for a specific amount, a percentage, or the entire amount. You can also make Esperanza Shelter the contingent beneficiary so that Esperanza will receive the balance of your plan only if your primary beneficiary doesn’t survive you.

Beneficiary to your insurance policy

If you have a policy that is not yet paid-up and ready for an outright donation, you can create a wonderful legacy by designating Esperanza Shelter as a partial or full beneficiary of an existing insurance policy. You will retain ownership of the policy and the flexibility to change your beneficiary designation later if your circumstances change, but any policy proceeds distributed to Esperanza will be exempt from estate tax in your estate and create a wonderful legacy at little or no cost.

How do I do this?

Contact your insurance company to complete or update your beneficiary designations or P.O.D. (Pay on Death) form. Designate Esperanza Shelter to receive all or a percentage of your life insurance policy proceeds.

You may also transfer ownership of a paid-up life insurance policy to Esperanza.

Reduce your income taxes by directing your Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) or Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) allows individuals who are 70½ years old or older to take advantage of a simple way to help our mission and receive tax benefits in return. As of 2024, you can give any amount up to $105,000 annually from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as Esperanza without having to pay income taxes on the distribution. This popular gift option is also commonly called the IRA charitable rollover. At the age of 73, the IRS requires you to take the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) annually from your IRA. If you do not need this as income, reduce your income taxes by gifting this amount annually to Esperanza Shelter and your other favorite charities.

Outright Bequest in your Will or Trust

Is it easier for you to make a gift in the future for the benefit of Esperanza Shelter? The benefit of this strategy is that you can plan today to provide for Esperanza in the future. This giving strategy also allows you the flexibility to change your will or trust if your circumstances change.

Every contribution makes hope, empowerment, and justice more accessible for survivors of domestic abuse. Your generosity can play a pivotal role in breaking down financial barriers and ensuring that survivors never walk their journey to healing alone.

In as little as one or two sentences, you can complete your gift. This type of donation to Esperanza in your will or living trust helps ensure that we continue supporting our clients.
