Caroline King lights up a room when she enters it.  So, understandably, the staff at Esperanza Shelter looks forward to seeing her when she volunteers every week.  Her weekly volunteer hours are spent assisting Denise Vermeulen, director of communications & grants, primarily organizing files.  However, King, formerly a Chicago business woman and realtor with a master’s in business administration, has been known to jump in whenever and wherever she is needed.  She’s even wrapped gifts for the children at the Shelter at holiday time.

Remarkably, Caroline King is also a generous donor to Esperanza Shelter.  In June 2019, King attended Esperanza’s fundraiser Bluejeans, Boots & Barbecue and saw a video about Esperanza’s children’s program, Seeds of Hope.  The Seeds of Hope staff works with children who have been abused.  The video so moved her that she donated $5,000 on the spot in support of the children we serve.

Born and raised near Charleston, South Carolina, King grew up watching her parents serve their community.  Both were physicians dearly committed to their patients.  Their example clearly made an impression on King as she has demonstrated through her personal commitment to Esperanza’s mission.  We are delighted to call Caroline King a friend and partner in Esperanza’s mission.
